Here are some pics from a recent visit to Lord Howe Island... a wonderful piece of paradise less than two hours by plane from Sydney...
There are around 350 permanent residents (many who are the descendants of the original settlers) and at any time, an equal number of tourists, so it is sublimely quiet and relaxed.
Only a handful of cars (maximum speed across the island is a sobering 25 kph) and lots of walking... no mobile phone service and deliberately limited internet access... does one good to walk away from it all for a while.
