Whiteout

Continuing with unearthing images relating to industrial sites in and around the Williamstown and Newport areas, I thought i should also include the images I put in to a group show called Whiteout... a curated travelling show with exhibitions in Melbourne and regional galleries with the first show in 2005...
This work was a big shift in technique from the large format industrial work below... the images were made with a 1960's plastic kids camera (an Agfa Clack), that happens to use 120 format roll film, giving a 6 x 9 cm. negative. The large negative combined with a cheap plastic lens makes it an aesthetically interesting camera... this is what it looks like (check the link as well) ...
Using a multiple exposure technique (4 clicks on a clack!),  gives a lovely sense of animation to the work.
The whiteout reference harks back to a time when I lived near the sea (at Point Lonsdale) and in times of major fog you would hear the rather mournful sound of the fog horn, warning ships of the dangerous conditions in the rip, and from the beach, watch as the ships emerged from the fog... certainly a 'whiteout' experience...
Like some of the images below, these were made during the construction of the Bolte Bridge...
