They seem to have taken on a life of their own and I can identify body parts, creatures and imaginary beings...

Botanic Gardens

Took a trip to the Royal Botanic Gardens to see the (relatively) new Guilfoyle's Volcano ...
Guilfoyle’s Volcano was built in 1876 and was used to store water for Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. After laying idle for 60 years, it is now restored as part of a significant landscape development project. The cactus garden has been re-established around the volcano and is looking pretty impressive and the gardens are amazing as usual ...

As a complete opposite of the garden pics, here are some images of a Fairfield paper mill that is due to cease operation soon. Thought I had better start making an attempt to photograph it before it goes completely. Who knows what will replace it... most likely an oversupply of compressed housing and a loss of open spaces... whatever happens, it is a hot topic of conversation in the area.

By the way of nothing in particular... the nostalgia thing has found me scanning a section of an antique box called the 'BanTam Duplicator'... it was designed to produce hand made screen prints of advertisements by a travelling salesman using the inbuilt screen, roller and inks....

Old Theatre Projection Slides

Cleaning out some cupboards recently, I came across some old theatre projection slides I had bought at one of the camera markets many years ago... for those too young to remember, these were hand painted glass slides that were projected before the movie started to promote various forthcoming movies plus local venues and to 'entertain' those who were foolish enough to turn up early... and I am talking about a long time ago!... the images were usually accompanied by a rather torturously enthisiastic 'voice over' that was supposed to excite you to go forth and spend in the required venue.
Having just scanned them, I think it is time to release them to the blog...

These images are scans of 'darkroom discards', left to interact with all the other discards in the rubbish bin.
They were collected over a period of time, many years ago while teaching darkroom skills to students.
Despite my best efforts as a teacher, there was always someone who would forget to wash discarded test prints before putting them in the rubbish bin, creating a sort of chemical 'soup', where the prints made complex chemical interactions with others, producing complex and remarkable results. Students must have got better as I haven't found any more in the last few years.... the ones I have are certainly a worthy addition to the blog...

I picked up the decidedly low-fi Jelly Cam camera again...it's getting hard to find a simple digital camera with crappy lens and similar digital chip performance (a 'digital diana') and there is no doubt the Jelly Cam is one of them... In saying that it can be a frustrating beast to use... you get some great image and it will then spontaneously decide to reset itself and trash all your hard work.Here are a couple of examples I managed to record. Other problems include not being able to port to a Mac (had to borrow and old Windows Laptop)... pain in the proverbial... I think I am losing interest!

If you have never seen one of these cameras, they look like this... they are designed as a camera for very young children and you sort of 'squeeze' them to take a photo...

These images of my reflection in various windows, were made during my trip to Norway, Denmark and to the UK, in 2010 ... The observation of oneself can be an amusing process ... at least in the days of film, you would be looking through a viewfinder... now it's the dreaded 'arms length stance' of the digital screen... not so attractive!
